One of the Aztecs' highest ranked signees from the Class of 2007, Miles Burris is anxious to don the Scarlet and Black. The 6-foot-2, 242-pound inside linebacker will graduate from Granite Bay (Calif.) High School on June 9th and make his way to San Diego State in early August.

"I'm really excited to start up at San Diego State," he expressed. "I have been training really hard. I make that my focus every day. They sent me a booklet that had some speed and strength workouts and I also have a plyometrics trainer on top of that. My main focus is speed right now.

"I know when I get there it will be the biggest challenge I have faced. I know their training is going to be hard and there is going to be a lot more competition because basically everyone on the team was a star player back in high school. So I am going to have to earn my place just like I did when I started in high school. I have to work my way up from the bottom of the totem pole."

Burris is aware that most incoming freshmen redshirt their first year on campus. He hopes his hard work this spring and upcoming summer will help him overcome the odds.

"I am working so that I will be physically and mentally ready, as much as I can be, when I get there," Burris said. "I want to learn the defense as fast as I can because I really do want to play my first year as a freshman. That is what I am working for."

Burris made a trip down to San Diego during spring break and he stayed with fellow 2007 signee Ryan Lindley. "He lives pretty close to the campus so we went and checked out some of the spring practices," he said. "I got to follow around the inside linebackers the whole time and get to know them and the drills they do. I really like Coach Bill Inge, the inside linebackers coach, and the rest of the coaches there. That is one of the main reasons why I picked San Diego Sate."

The Aztecs' strong linebacker tradition was another reason why Burris chose to sign with San Diego State over other scholarship offers from Nebraska, Boise State, Nevada-Reno and Army. "They have had a lot of linebackers go pro and that is my ultimate goal, to make it to the NFL," he added.

Because of his size, Burris will likely fit in at the Mike linebacker position at San Diego State.

"We saw a video of Miles in which he did a standing back flip so we knew he was athletic," Aztecs' head coach Chuck Long said of Burris back on signing day. "He is smart and can run."

Rivals.com ranked Burris as the nation's 30th best inside linebacker from the 2007 recruiting class.
