Irish double cover Blanton's recruitment
The spring evaluation period puts more than prospects under the microscope.
The post-spring practice window, intended to give coaches a better look at the prospects on their target lists, has turned into a marathon of school visits where recruiters try to see and be seen. In the case of cornerback Robert Blanton from Matthews, N.C., Notre Dame has announced its presence at Butler High School.
During the evaluation period's first week, defensive coordinator Corwin Brown and defensive backs coach Bill Lewis trekked to see Blanton. On Wednesday, Lewis returned with Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis. According to Butler head coach Mike Newsome, Weis was only the third head coach to visit, following North Carolina State's Tom O'Brien and Vanderbilt's Bobby Johnson.
That list includes Michigan, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, California, North Carolina State, Oregon and Colorado. Newsome said it's common for five college coaching staffs to stream through Butler's halls each day, with the program also boasting a quarterback and two more defensive backs with top Division I offers.
