Hughes gets spring preview
For most high school seniors, spring break means heading south. For Robert Hughes, it meant heading to South Bend.
Instead of following the hordes to various beaches in Florida, Hughes trekked to Notre Dame last week to watch his future team go through spring drills. He studied the practices, took notes in team meetings and chatted with head coach Charlie Weis. The standout from Hubbard High School in Chicago might not be an early enrollee at Notre Dame, but he probably deserves some extra credit.
Hughes will be back for the Blue-Gold Game too, as if he hasn't seen enough of the Irish already.
What Hughes watched was a crowded depth chart at running back fight for playing time with Travis Thomas, James Aldridge and early enrollee Armando Allen battling for reps. Hughes will join that mix this summer for voluntary workouts and his spring break in South Bend should help him hit the field running.
