Aldine QB not hearing much from UT
Aldine (Texas) High athlete Darron Thomas might be one of the fastest rising college prospects from the Class of 2008 in the Greater Houston Area, but you'll have to forgive him if he doesn't have time to stop and smell the roses.
He's simply too busy right now to notice.
"I've been working very hard in the off-season to get stronger," Thomas said. "I've gone from 150 pounds to weighing 195 pounds - almost 200 pounds. I've got my bench press up to 275 pounds and I was only at 185 pounds last year. I'm just working to get bigger and stronger all the time."
Thomas' hunger for improvement and his potential as a football player at the next level have made him one of the more interesting prospects in the state for 2008. Although he's currently being recruited as a duel-threat quarterback by some schools, his athleticism makes him a candidate to play at a number of different positions.
That versatility is one of the reasons why colleges across the country are starting to take notice.
"I'm starting to hear from Tennessee quite a bit," Thomas said. "Tennessee, LSU and Northwestern and recruiting me hard. The Northwestern coach has already told me that I have a scholarship. I plan on going to a Texas A&M Junior Day and LSU wants me to come to a Junior Day at the end of February."
One school that hasn't shown much early interest in the 6-3, 195-pound Thomas is Texas.
"I've received a couple of letters from them, but I don't think they are interested in me that much," Thomas said. "They are really recruiting Daniel (Campbell) hard."
As far as favorites are concerned, Thomas said it's a little early for that.
"I'm really just looking for a school that works for me," Thomas said. "I want to be able to fit into the offense that they have and I want to be able to go to a good academic school."
