'Dores add shoulder pads on Sunday
Sunday evening marked the third practice of fall drills for the Vanderbilt football team, and the first day in which the squad donned shoulder pads. Even though full pads won't come on for two more practices, Commodore Coach Bobby Johnson felt that Sunday night was somewhat of a turning point for fall drills.
"You can see who's going to stick their nose in there and be physical when you've got shoulder pads on," said Johnson. "Timing is a whole lot better. When you don't have pads on, timing is off, because you don't have the collision.
"Here, you can step into your block, you can take on a block or act like you're coming to tackle. So the speed is more realistic with shoulder pads. It's a big help, even to have shoulder pads."
