Banks hopes to make an early impact
Georgia already has a pretty good idea who will start at its two safety positions when it opens the 2006 season Sept. 2 against Western Kentucky. By the time that game rolls around, true freshman safety Quintin Banks hopes to be a factor on the Bulldogs' depth chart.
As the Bulldogs have just a few weeks before the christening of preseason camp Aug. 5, senior Tra Battle is the starter at rover with junior Kelin Johnson the leader to start at free safety. Sophomore C.J. Byrd will be Johnson's toughest competition at free safety with redshirt freshman Donovan Baldwin being the top back-up behind Battle. But the depth at safety doesn't end there with redshirt freshman Antavious Coates and a pair of true freshmen, Banks and Reshad Jones also in position to challenge for playing time at both positions.
"I expect to be ready," Banks said. "Once I get there, I'll try to focus and get ready for the season, try to get on the field and do the best that I can."
If Banks figures his way into the playing rotation, he'll be thrust into a position that's seen a line of big hitting safeties in the last few years with standouts like Thomas Davis, Greg Blue and Sean Jones.
