Butler, Commodores getting healthy at the right time?
After Missouri's whipping of a depleted Georgia team in Athens over the weekend, Vanderbilt's 51-28 loss to the Tigers two weeks ago may not look as bad as it did then. But on Monday, coach James Franklin and some of his players acknowledged that things aren't where he wants them to be right now, especially on the defensive side.
If you look at the overall stats, VU's not in awful shape, ranking eighth (26.5 points) in scoring defense and seventh (390 yards) in total defense. But those stats were skewed by games against Austin Peay, UAB and UMass, because the Commodores have been torched by Ole Miss (39 points, 489 yards), South Carolina (35, 579) and Missouri (51, 523) in their three Southeastern Conference games.
It's a far cry from the same squad that Franklin put on the field his first two years in Nashville -- one that finished in the top 25 of the NCAA's total defense rankings both years.
