Captains already making their mark in fall camp
It was never made into a big deal by head coach Bo Pelini this summer when it happened, but for the first time ever in his tenure at Nebraska he named four senior captains before the start of Fall Camp, along with a handful of assistant captains.
In the past Pelini would name four different captains each week before every game, and then select permanent captains before the bowl game in December. The previous tradition with former head coaches at NU was to name captains at the end of training camp in August.
This summer Pelini named quarterback Taylor Martinez, wide receiver Quincy Enunwa, offensive lineman Spencer Long and cornerback Ciante Evans has his four senior captains. Players such as junior running back Ameer Abdullah, senior defensive end Jason Ankrah and senior offensive lineman Jeremiah Sirles were a handful of players that took on the assistant captain titles from Pelini.
This is one of many ways Pelini has tried to change the culture and leadership of the program heading into the 2013 season. Another thing he's done to bring the offense and defense closer this off-season is require an offensive player to sit by a defensive player in the team meeting room, that way there won't be such a divide between the two units.
