Combs on his way to Kansas
Marquel Combs is finally getting his chance to show what he can do at Kansas. Combs, who hoped to arrive last semester, is on his way to Lawrence.
His plane leaves this morning for Kansas.
"It's a wonderful feeling to finally get to KU," Combs said.
This spring Combs finished up the course work he had remaining. He also made it a goal to stay in shape so he would be read when he reports.
"I'm ready to get to work with coach Holsopple," Combs said. "I'm ready to go through one of his workouts. Last year I played at 317 and I am down to 296. I have been working very hard. I am slimmer and lighter on my feet."
Last year Combs lined up over the center in a new defensive scheme for LA Pierce. He says he is back down to playing weight from his freshman season that earned him over 50 scholarship offers.
"I have to be light on my feet," he said. "I'm quicker and I have worked hard on my get-off. There was a big difference between this year and last season. This year I played inside and had to take on two or three blockers. I had to go up against all the heavies. In coach Campo's defense I will be a three technique so I am back to my normal weight."
Last semester Combs said he stayed in touch with several recruits and current KU players. He said he spoke with Charlie Weis every Sunday.
"I like talking to coach Weis because you can tell he's putting a lot of work in," Combs said. "I can't wait to sit down and break down film with him. I think we have some good football players in this class and there are good players in the program. We just need to focus and do the little things. We need to trust each other and work hard."
Combs has dreams of playing at the next level and knows he has two years to prove what he can do. He has goals for the season but it comes down to the Jayhawks winning games.
"I have a lot of things running through my head for this year," he said. "My main goal is to come out and give everything I have. I'm shooting to be an All-American or All-Big 12. I want to help the team get back to a BCS Bowl game. I just want to make everyone better."
