SPRING FOOTBALL: Defense wants TO's
EAST LANSING - Michigan State finished the 2012 season ranked No. 4 in total defense, No. 8 in run defense, No. 9 in scoring defense, No. 3 pass efficiency defense, and No. 9 in pass defense.
But senior linebacker Max Bullough sees plenty of room for improvement.
"We lose a couple of games by a few inches last year and we won a few games by the same, so it is just finding those inches, finding a way to make up for those in the off-season," said Bullough. "We can't necessarily play the game tomorrow, but we can do something today to make sure we are in better position next year."
Bullough believes the Spartan defense needs to create more turnovers and increase its sack total in 2013.
"We went through a lot of stats," Bullough said. "We had a lot of good things last year and year's past, but we need more turnovers and we didn't have as many sacks as we would like to have last year. Those are two specific points that we could talk about. But there are always things. I don't think we finished enough games out last year like we could have."
Michigan State recovered just six fumbles in 2012, the fewest by a Spartan team during Mark Dantonio's first six seasons as head coach.
"Forcing fumbles is one of our main focuses on defense, we didn't have enough of them last year," Bullough said. "We had a couple of them fall our way, a couple of them that we didn't take advantage of but fumbles is probably one of our No. 1 goals this spring season."
