Newell takes in another Kansas trip
Lawrence isn't a strange place for Peyton Newell. His home town Hiawatha, is less than a two hour drive. His father, Frank, graduated from Kansas. He's been on campus before but he got a closer view of the program during the Friday Night Lights camp.
Being around the coaches in a different environment gave him a new angle on the Kansas program.
"One thing I saw at the camp is there is a new attitude and confidence around the program," Newell said. "You can tell they are expecting to good things. I like how the coaches were coaching at camp."
Newell attended the event last year and has grown familiar with Kansas defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt.
"He's a great coach and I like everything he does," Newell said. "He was a great player at TCU and does a good job."
It was a busy week for Newell who also went through his high school team camp. During his visit to Lawrence he got the chance to speak with Charlie Weis.
"This was the first time I had a chance to sit down and talk with him," Newell said of Weis. "He's definitely a good guy and coach. I am planning on going back to see him in the two or three weeks."
The Newell's were headed to Nebraska next. After that they will take a trip to Stanford before heading down to Texas. The trip to Texas will end the busy of recruiting trips. Newell will attend the Rivals Underclassmen Challenge in Dallas in early July.
"When I go down there I will take visits to Baylor, TCU, and Texas Tech," he said. "I have to see but I might also visit Texas A&M. Then that will be it. We wanted to hit it hard in the beginning and relax at the end of summer."
