White close to a Spartan offer
One of the top performers at the Spartan Camp on Monday was 6-foot-1, 180-pound defensive back prospect James White of Detroit Crockett High School. SpartanMag.com caught up with him and has the latest on his recruitment.
White made a return trip to East Lansing to showcase his skills and hopefully close in on a Michigan state scholarship offer. White camped at Michigan State back in June and performed well enough that he put himself on the short list of prospect the Spartans may offer at the defensive back spot.
We asked White about how he felt about his performance on Monday.
"It was fun, he stated. I played hard and showed I could play Division 1 football. I ran a 4.5 forty-yard dash; I had a 34 inch vertical jump and 9'9 broad jump. I showed my ability to make plays on defense."
SpartanMag.com has no doubt that White can play Division 1 football and neither do several college coaches. SpartanMag.com included him on our Hot List of top performers at camp and he already has scholarship offers on the table from Akron, Bowling Green and Toledo. The only question is whether he can play Big Ten championship level defense. According to White, he may not have to wait long to find out
"Coach Barnett and the other coaches say they like the way I move my hips and my aggressive coverage on the man," he said. "I am very confident in my abilities and determined. They told me I will know if I am going to get offered by the 29th (July)."
If the Spartans do offer White, it may not take long for him to make a decision. He is very familiar with the school, program, coaches and current players. His former teammate, Tony Lippett, is one of the top young players on the team.
When we asked him if he could make a commitment on the spot if he receives a Michigan State scholarship, White replied simply in one word.
It was obvious to Spartanmag.com on Monday that White wants to play at Michigan State University. He worked hard all day in camp and made sure the coaches noticed when he made big plays. He even called out to the staff in one instance to make sure they saw him in action.
White got in some good work at the camp. The Spartans had a talented group of wideouts in attendance, led by standouts MacGarrett Kings Jr. of Florida and Monty Madaris of Ohio. Those two provided stiff competition and forced White to cover a big, physical wideout in Madaris and a speed demon in Kings.
SparrtanMag.com will be sure to keep close tabs on White in the coming weeks. Some team is going to get a good football player and it might just be the Michigan State Spartans.
