Garness ready for future success
The holiday season came early for the USC coaching staff.
San Francisco (Calif.) City College offensive lineman David Garness didn't know with complete certainty that he would commit to USC on his visit this weekend. But after he made his rounds on the campus, he had seen enough.
The junior college offensive lineman became the latest recruit to commit to the Trojans.
"I wasn't entirely sure going in, but I got a really good feel for it," Garness said. "I was looking for a combination of education, coaching and opportunity to play. I feel like USC is the school where I can maximize all those opportunities."
Having already been on official visits to Washington, UTEP and New Mexico, Garness had a feel for the recruiting game entering his visit. But his visit to USC felt different than his previous ones.
"I had the campus tour and met with the coaches," Garness said. "Then they gave us a break during the day. I went and had a talk with my family, and we all agreed it was the best opportunity for me. At dinner that night, that's where I told the coaches that I wanted to go.
"They were fired up about my commitment. It's good to see that appreciation."
Garness' commitment bolsters a USC offensive line class in need of bodies. His ability to play multiple positions may prove to be vital for the Trojans,
"I asked them where they see me playing. They said they just want to get me in during the spring and we'll see from there," Garness said. "I'm open, so we'll see at the end of spring."
As a junior college transfer, Garness doesn't have the same career timeline that high school prospects do. But even with sanctions setting in during his playing career, the Alaska native sees USC maintaining its high standards.
"The program is going to continue to be successful," Garness said. "I hope to be a part of that. I want to go to USC and be an impact player."
Garness said he plans to sign his letter of intent Wednesday. He plans to enroll at USC on Jan. 10.
