Late scoring drive give Bulldogs 23-20 victory over Vandals
Going into Saturday nights game against the Idaho Vandals, many Fresno State fans did not know what to expect. Were we going to see the team that came out and nearly upset Nevada or the team that faced Boise State and fell 51-0.
Well Saturday night a diffrent team came out to play. On a night that was gloomy from the beggining with rain and not a lot of energy in the stands on Thanksgiving weekend, The Bulldogs came out and played like the Turkey had put them to sleep over the weekend.
The game was a defenseive struggle early as both teams failed to do anything spectacular in the first half. The Bulldogs however did get two field goals by Kevin Goessling to take a 6-0 lead at halftime.
Fresno States defense continued to play well and keep the Bulldogs ahead when on Idahos opening drive of the second half, Bulldogs defensive back Travis Brown intercepted a pass from Nathan Enderle and ran it back 30 yards for a touchdwon to give the Bulldogs a 13-3 lead after three quarters.
Going into the fourth quarter the Bulldogs offense which had averaged 34 points per game coming into the game was in a ine quarter scoring drought.
Fresno State's defense which had played great for three quarters was bending but not breaking when they allowed another feild goal to the Vandals which made it 13-6 with 10:13 remaining in the game. Fresno State woul respond with a field goal of their own to make it 16-6 with 6:42 remaining in game.
That's when the game took a turn, on the insuing kick off Idahos Justin Veltung took the ball 84 yards for a Vandals touchdown to cut the Bulldogs lead to 16-13 with 6:29 remaining. After a three and out Fresno State had to punt the ball back to Idaho. That's when Deonte Jackson ran the ball in from three yards out to cap a seven play 71 yard drive that took three minuets off the clock and gave the Vandals a 20-16 lead with 2:01 second remaining in the game.
Now Fresno State was backed into a corner with an offense that had been struggling to get into endzone. After the Idaho Kick-off went out of bound the Bulldogs started the final drive of the game from their own 40 yard line. On first down Ryan Colburn ran for a gian of eight yards to the Bulldogs 48. From their the Bulldogs would gain nothing on second and thrid down and be forced to convert a fourth down and 1 to keep the game alive. Once again Colburn came up big as he quarterback sneaked his way to a first down to the Idaho 48 yard line.
After advancing the ball to the Vandals 25 yard line, Colburn who finished the game 21-33 for 219, found junior Reciver Jamel Hamler for 24 yards over the middle that took the ball down to the Idaho 1 yard line with 18 seconds to go in game. On the very next play Sophmore running back A.J Ellis took the ball and leaped over the pile for a one yard touchdwon run that gave the Bulldogs the victory 23-20.
Ellis finished the game with 11 carries for 56 yards but his final carry was the biggest of the night.
With the win Fresno State moves to 7-4 overall and finishes WAC play 5-3. They host Big Ten Foe Illinois Friday night at Bulldog Stadium in their final game of the regular season. It will also be senior day.
