Strayhorn adds punch to Spartan pass-rush
EAST LANSING - At the end of summer Michigan State coaches believed that Johnathan Strayhorn would bring energy to a four-man pass-rush that ranged from inconsistent to non-existent in 2009.
The Spartans changed course with Strayhorn after he reported to training camp 25 pounds heavier than he was during spring football. The junior from Detroit spent the first part of the season at nose tackle behind Blake Treadwell and Kevin Pickelman.
Strayhorn spent most of September shedding the bad weight. The former walk-on, who was put on scholarship by Mark Dantonio this fall, has also worked back into the rotation at defensive end. And during the first four games of the Big Ten season, Strayhorn has shown why his coaches had the confidence in him that they did at the end of summer.
