Strong start for Pettway
When Pensacola (FL) Catholic star D.J. Pettway saw the Alabama Crimson Tide lose its first regular season game since 2007 last weekend, he was disappointed but not disturbed. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound defender who has been committed to the Tide since April said the loss was understandable and made him reflect on everything Alabama has accomplished in the last two and a half seasons.
"I didn't think anything of it really when Alabama lost to South Carolina," Pettway said. "I mean, it hurt to see them lose, but they are young and they just didn't have it on Saturday. Those days are going to happen. They had an incredible streak of 19 in a row, and I don't think anyone else in the country would have been able to play their schedule and go undefeated."
The four-star defensive end has already made two trips to Tuscaloosa this fall and will be back at the Capstone again this weekend to witness the Homecoming festivities.
"I visited for Penn State and Florida, and I don't know if I am coming to Ole Miss or not yet but I will definitely be back for the Auburn game. We are 6-0 right now and we are trying to get back for another deep playoff run. That is my focus right now."
Pensacola Catholic's undefeated record has depended heavily on the contributions of Pettway, who has been a dominant force on the defensive line this year so far.
"I think I am having my best season yet. I have about 60 tackles and seven sacks, but I am getting a lot of double teams and other guys are making plays. I think I am an overall smarter football player this year. I am getting off blocks better and have a better first step."
"I think at Alabama I will probably play Jack linebacker, but I can play anywhere on the defensive line. I take pride in the fact I can stop the run as well as I rush the passer. I probably enjoy playing defensive end the most, but I can make plays from anywhere. I am just excited to be headed to Alabama where I can maximize my potential."
Pettway is rated the No. 11 strongside defensive end prospect in the nation and the No. 159 overall prospect in the nation by Rivals.com
